Free Boat Hire - 60th Anniversary of the Lake

Update: Both the 12th and 19th of October are now fully booked - Thank you for your interest As part of the 60th anniversary of Lake Burley Griffin, and the 65th anniversary of the Canberra Yacht Club, we are offering free boat hire on the 19th of October 2024. Hires are for 1 hour, on the hour. Plan to arrive approximately 10 minutes before your start time.

The hire vessels are Hobie Waves, a fun resort style catamaran that's easy to sail. No experience is necessary, our friendly staff will give you some quick tips before getting you out on the water! Participants must be over 7 years old; up to two adults and two children per boat or 3 adults. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult on board, children 12-18 must have a parent on site to sign the indemnity forms. Please note, you will get wet, bring shoes and clothes you are happy to wear into the water. The club provides life jackets and they must be worn at all times during the hire.

The Canberra Southern Cross Club has implemented paid parking to reduce unauthorised use of the car park area. We have worked closely with them on planning the change to ensure continued access for sailors.

Sailability

Sailability at the CYC

The Canberra Yacht Club offers Sailability, an international program to assist people of all-abilities to get into sailing. This is by providing an additional level of support, an established network of volunteers, and resources to assist participants. Equipment is provided to assist those with limited mobility to get into and out of boats, with modified docking areas that are accessible and affordable options to participate. Different types of boats are provided including the Hansa Class that are easy to sail. If you have a disability and wish to experience “Freedom on the Water”, you are especially welcome typically Sunday morning. Find out more and Book Online here.
